WhatsApp Export Guide

How to Export WhatsApp Chats with Media on iOS and Android

Step-by-step instructions for exporting WhatsApp conversations alongside photos, videos, voice notes, and document attachments, then opening them privately in Chat Explorer.

Exporting your chat logs is the first step toward reclaiming ownership of your digital memories. While WhatsApp keeps your messages locked inside its application database, it includes a built-in feature to package individual conversation logs into a standard format. When you choose to include media, WhatsApp generates a `.zip` archive containing a text transcript (`_chat.txt`) and all the shared photos, videos, voice notes, and documents from that conversation.

In this guide, we walk you through the exact steps to generate these exports on both iOS and Android, transfer them securely, and load them into Chat Explorer.

Important Note on WhatsApp Export Limits: WhatsApp enforces strict size and count caps on chat exports to prevent server resource abuse. Currently, exports are limited to approximately **10,000 messages with media** or **40,000 messages without media**. If your chat is extremely long, WhatsApp will automatically truncate the oldest messages when you choose to export with media.

How to Export on iPhone (iOS)

On Apple devices, WhatsApp handles the export through the system share sheet. Follow these steps:

  1. Open WhatsApp and tap on the individual or group chat you wish to export.
  2. Tap the contact name or group subject at the top of the navigation bar to open the chat details page.
  3. Scroll all the way to the bottom of the details page and tap Export Chat.
  4. A prompt will ask: "Attaching media will generate a larger chat export." Tap Attach Media. (If you only want a text backup, select Without Media).
  5. Wait for WhatsApp to package the files. Once completed, the iOS Share Sheet will appear.
  6. To save the file:
    • Select Save to Files to store the `.zip` archive in your iCloud Drive or local device storage.
    • Or select AirDrop to send the `.zip` directly to your Mac.
    • Or tap the Chat Explorer icon to share and import it into the app immediately.

How to Export on Android Devices

The Android export process is slightly different and requires saving the resulting `.zip` to your Google Drive, local storage, or sending it to an Apple device via email or local network:

  1. Open WhatsApp on your Android phone and open the target conversation.
  2. Tap the three vertical dots menu in the top-right corner.
  3. Tap More, then select Export Chat.
  4. Choose Include Media in the pop-up modal. Android will compile your messages and media attachments into a single zip file.
  5. In the sharing menu that appears, choose a destination:
    • Save the archive to your **Google Drive** or a local file explorer.
    • Send the file to your computer using a local file-sharing tool, email, or a messaging platform.
  6. Transfer the exported `.zip` file to your iPhone, iPad, or Mac (e.g., via iCloud Drive, AirDrop, or email) so Chat Explorer can access it.

Opening and Reading the Archive in Chat Explorer

Once the `.zip` file is on your Apple device, importing it is instantaneous:

  • On iPhone or iPad: Open Chat Explorer, tap the **Import Chat** card (or the '+' button), browse your files, and select the `.zip` archive. Alternatively, you can find the `.zip` in the native Apple **Files app**, long-press it, tap **Share**, and choose **Chat Explorer**.
  • On Mac: Drag and drop the `.zip` file directly into the Chat Explorer window, or double-click the file to open it with the app.

Once imported, Chat Explorer reads the archive locally, indexes the messages, parses timestamps, and builds a dedicated media gallery so you can scroll photos, watch videos, and listen to voice notes inline.

Troubleshooting Common Media Export Issues

1. WhatsApp crashes or hangs during export

If a chat has years of history or gigabytes of media, WhatsApp may run out of memory and crash before generating the `.zip`. To resolve this, try exporting the chat **without media**. Chat Explorer will still be able to reconstruct the full text transcript and show timelines, but without attachment previews.

2. Attachments or old messages are missing

If you notice that messages or images from several years ago are missing from the imported archive, it is likely due to WhatsApp's export limits. To get a complete history, you may need to export "Without Media" (which allows up to 40,000 messages) or use a desktop backup browser if you require access to deleted database items.

3. The zip file says "Invalid Format"

Ensure that you are importing the original `.zip` file generated directly by WhatsApp. Do not extract or unzip the folder yourself. Chat Explorer needs the folder structure and raw text logs in their exact original states to parse the data correctly.
